Composition Note 12 – Size and Proportion

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than understanding composition. I have come to a conclusion that it can be explained through 200 compositional studies. I am planning to post 200 composition studies in the next 300 days)

I will tell one incident which happened in my class room. One of my student was copying a drawing. She was little bit confident about her ability to draw. After one hour, in middle of drawing, she understood something had gone wrong. And she also understood, where it had gone wrong.

She drew one of the shapes in the picture, a little bit big than its normal size. So all connected parts with that particular part gone wrong in their proportions. She lost. I told her again, what I said previously to her…’’ Don’t draw. Look at it. Judge heights and widths and their relations. It will come.’’

She had started to work again. This time she began to see their heights, widths and their relations, instead of seeing the picture. Then she got it.

I asked her..” What happened In your mind in the first and second attempts? ”

She told me that in her first attempt she concentrated on the picture … how to copy it? In her second attempt, she did not bother about the copying the picture. She concentrated only on heights and widths of the shapes and their relations. This was what she said.

To learn art, start with Drawing. To draw you require good observation skills.

Observation is the key to drawing. That is … ”Learning to see ”

From there, start your journey. See every thing as a shape. There are so many small and smaller shapes in those shapes. See the relation between those shapes. That kind of study will help you to understand …’ Size and Proportions.’

Composition Note 11 – Positive and Negative Spaces

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than understanding composition. I have come to a conclusion that it can be explained through 200 compositional studies. I am planning to post 200 composition studies in the next 300 days)

When an object or a shape occupied certain space, we call that space is positive space. Whatever space is not occupied by a shape on the picture plane that is negative space. These positive and negative spaces are very powerful tools to understand the size and proportion of the shapes. Taking these shapes, making them as forms through creating volume, placing them in spatial arrangement is a part of creating depth on picture space.

Composition Note – 10 It’s all interrelated

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than understanding composition. I have come to a conclusion that it can be explained through 200 compositional studies. I am planning to post 200 composition studies in the next 300 days)
One of my student asked me …

”Sir, I am not getting this painting properly, something went wrong. I am not able to understand what it is? ”

She has painted a landscape. In that landscape sky is the predominant area. The colors and tones which she used for the sky is not created the effects of sky. Instead of that, it appears like a painted cloth.

I told her…” when you are painting sky you didn’t experience the visual feeling of it. Just you painted it with out thinking. Before you paint the sky area, you would have thought many questions about it. For example…. You have to understand the nature of the sky. It’s not a wall or a curtain you are going to paint, it’s the sky which appears to us in diffused greys with luminous effect. It is the source of light. The landscape is receiving that light. The foreground, middle ground trees, distance mountains whatever are there, they are receiving that light. It’s all interrelated. When you are painting sky you should experience it as a part of the whole. To understand this whole, an art student has to learn Composition.”

Composition Note – 9 Lines as Measuring Scale

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than understanding composition. I have come to a conclusion that it can be explained through 200 compositional studies. I am planning to post 200 composition studies in the next 300 days)
Line will be used to capture the shapes, sizes, and their proportions.

Lines can be used as measuring scale. This measuring scale will decide the sizes of shapes and their proportions.

Without the help of measuring scale of line we won’t capture three dimensional illusion of space on our two dimensional picture space.

In nature we won’t see lines. We see only shapes. The trees, houses, clouds, animals and people …all are shapes. But they are having edges. Because of these edges their shapes, sizes and proportions will be decided. We call these edges as boundaries. These boundaries will be marked with lines.

Composition Note – 8 Achieving Movement

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than understanding composition. I have come to a conclusion that it can be explained through 200 compositional studies. I am planning to post 200 composition studies in the next 300 days)

When you see the painting as a whole, you will feel it. It will be achieved by connecting everything to everything whether they may be….. shapes, spaces positive or negative, value and color. They have to be repeated, and variation has to be created in them. And you have to find contrast in them. Finally balance, pattern, rhythm, emphasis….everything. If you play all these things properly you feel movement.

Composition Note 7 – 200 composition Notes in 300 Days – Many art students try to ignore it….

Peaceful Day   Artist: Magunta Dayakar

Perspective is a very important subject every art student has to learn. Many art students try to ignore it. They feel it’s a tedious subject and there is no fun and excitement. But once you learn the subject it will be fun to work with it. The results will surprise you. Without perspective knowledge artist’s paintings will appear weak and lacking strength. If a student wants true excitement from his work it’s better to learn perspective. Lot of books are available to learn it.

Here I am giving a quote from Leonardo da Vinci ….

‘ There are three aspects to perspective. The first has to do with how the size of objects seems to diminish according to distance: the second, the manner in which colors change the farther away they are from the eye; the third defines how objects ought to be finished less carefully the farther away they are.’

Keats says “Beauty is Truth, Truth is Beauty.”

From artist’s point of view truth and beauty can exist together in his work. The search for the inner truth is the search for the beauty. If we don’t understand the inner truth, the external beauty will fade away with time.

We can say it this way. ” Do not deceived by appearances, look at their inside. ”

Nature               Artist : Magunta Dayakar

… For example, you are meeting a person at some occasion. He is a business man. He talks sweetly, intelligently and his gestures are very refined and his appearance is very posh. You are mesmerised by his presence. In a few months you became close to him. A friend of his. One fine day you invested your hard earned money in his business because he convinced you that it would be a good investment. And you believed you have done a wise thing. Few months passed. Suddenly one day you came to know that his words are not true. He trapped you shrewdly to steal your money. By the time you realised it, it’s already too late. You became helpless.”

Why things happened this way? The reason is simple. You are influenced by his external appearances and acts. There is nothing wrong in getting influenced by something. If we won’t be influenced we are not humans. We will become emotional due to influences but at the same time we should question our influences and emotions. This nature of questioning is the character of a creative person.

Again coming to the matter, what happened in your case? You are influenced by him and you become emotional; so you simply believed him. Then it leads to losing your money. You are deceived by his appearance.
Once again I am saying, getting influenced and becoming emotional due to some influence is not wrong but you have to question the nature of those influences, whether they are genuine or false.

Here the problem lies … Even you don’t know that you have to question your influences! Instead of questioning simply you are carried away by them.

Same thing happens when you start to draw something. Don’t think art and life are two different things. In fact both are one. Whatever happens in life the same would happen in art. Because of your ignorance you don’t know that.

Ignorance! It’s the reason for our failures in art and life. I told you life and art are the same. Many people think art is different from life. They think it’s something different, that it is the outcome of the emotional expression of the artist. This kind of thought itself is another kind of ignorance.

What does it mean … ‘ Emotional expression of an artist? ‘ Is he doing drawing or painting in some kind of emotional state? Is it true? Or false?

The one who is swayed by excitement, ecstasy, elation, for him, how is it possible to think coolly!

With out that state of mind how he will see his subject as a whole? Seeing the thing as a whole … an artist needs that skill. Not only an artist, each and everyone whether they are business men, scientists, actors, musicians, or anyone, who wants to think creatively they need that skill … Seeing it as a whole. The whole means … Inner self and Outer self.

If they understand The Whole, Then only they are able to understand Keats words … “Beauty is Truth, Truth is Beauty.”

Composition Note 6 – 200 Composition Notes in 300 Days – Color is one of the key Elements in Composition. So study the color

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than this approach. I am planning to post 200 composition notes in the next 300 days)

Color comes out of Light. We see light through Colors. To work Paintings , to design Interiors, to illustrate Fashion design, to create Animation world, to do anything with color ,we should understand color and its theory, its interactions, its properties… everything about it.

What is Hue? What is Value ? What is Saturation ? What is Temperature? What are Warm and Cool Colors? Whar are Monochrome and Analogues Colors? What are Complementary Colors? Find the essence of Complementary Colors. Why Simultaneous Contrast is more energetic in its applications? How Color intensity will be changed mixing with grey? How to get Color transition without changing it’s Value? How to keep your Colors fresh?

Why Colors will become muddy? How to recognize Local Color? How to get Color transition without changing it’s Value?

What is the Color of Shadow? What is the Color of Light? What is the temperature of the Highlight in both outdoor and indoors? What is the color of the Reflective light? What is the Color of Cast shadow? How many Color Contrasts are there? What are Color Relations? What is the difference between the Color applications before and after 1850?

Truly few questions to know the answers. But to get them into the mind with proper understanding will take time.

Composition Notes 5 – 200 Composition Notes in 300 Days – Understanding the Values and arranging them in order is the key to Composition.

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than this approach. I am planning to post 200 composition notes in the next 300 days)

Here is one example …There is a room. Dimension of that room, say it is 100 square feet or some thing. You call it a space. In that space you want to put few objects, may be seven or eight. So you arranged these objects in that space.

Light is the key. Without light we won’t see anything in this physical world. So if you want to make your objects visible to the eye, there you need some light. O.K. We can imagine that light is coming from a window of that room. Imagine. What’s going to happen now? That light will fall in the room or in that space. Light falls also on the objects in the space.

Now they are visible to us. How they will be visible to us?

More light falls on the objects nearer to the light source.

Less light falls on the objects which are a little bit away.

Objects which are far away, almost they will be in the dark.

Because light is coming only from one source,( Single source of light is preferred to avoid confusion)

Opposite side of the objects towards light will be in shadow (they will get reflected light) Because of this process you will see light and shadows. You call these light and shadows technically ‘Values’.

Understanding these values and arranging them in order is the key to composition.

Size of the objects and their textures are all part of this play. Value Scale … divide it from lightest light to darkest dark. It’s better if you limit this scale to 5 – 8 values. When you are doing a painting in black and white experiment with these values. Let one of those values, I mean either dark or light values, dominate your picture. Otherwise confusion will arise. Make it simple.

Avoid details in the beginning. See them as big masses. Study those variations of values carefully. Details will appear on their own. Which objects are getting more light, which are getting less. Because of their textures every object will appear different.

Because of their colors… some objects will reflect more light, some will absorb more. Study them carefully. Study them as a whole. This is the Key. Human eye sees the things this way.

Composition Note 4 – 200 Composition Notes in 300 Days – Thin line between reality and artistic interpretation of the reality.

The View   Artist:Magunta Dayakar

(Studying Composition means Learning Painting. There are no other ways to learn painting than this approach. I am planning to post 200 composition notes in the next 300 days)

Sometimes to achieve visual beauty we have to ignore some facts. In this composition study I avoid reflection of the trees in the water. If I work those reflections they will create a disturbance at the foreground. It will ruin the total picture. There is a thin line between reality and artistic interpretation of the reality. Study of the Composition will guide us to do the artistic interpretation of reality.
